Solving the Housing Problem

THERE ARE MANY ELEMENTS IN PROVIDING HOUSING TO ADULTS WITH IDD THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED

* PUBLIC AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

This issue is largely an invisible issue to the general public, and to many parents of younger children with IDD.  Increasing public awareness will assist us in gaining the support necessary for government aid to remedy this problem .

*PROVIDING HOUSING MODELS

 There is not a one-size-fits-all- model for housing adults with IDD. Individual needs and preferences will vary, requiring a range of housing models. Fuller Lives intends to be a repository of information on various housing models for both parents and those who are interested in becoming providers of housing.

*DEVELOPING DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS

Within the next 10 years, Fuller Lives hopes to develop one or two housing facilities to demonstrate that increasing housing options is indeed possible.

*FACILITATE ACCESS  TO  RESOURCES and  BUILD COMMUNITY

1. Adult children with IDD need  assistance in their daily living. Knowledgeable, trustworthy and caring people are needed to provide support. Finding  qualified individuals is a concern for people thinking of starting group homes or those thinking of placing their adult child in independent living. Fuller Lives plans to use connections with schools and other parts of the community to develop relationships  with people who might be particularly suited for working with this population, creating a list to be shared with those seek helpers.

2.   People with IDD often have equipment needs which may prove to be temporary.  Fuller lives plans to  develop a Facebook group that will allow

member to both offer equipment they are finished with to others, or ask others for equipment they need.  This site may also serve as an information site, allowing caregivers to post questions  to be answered by others.

Support/Promote Legislation that promotes housing needs

1. Long term care ombudsman

2. New affordable housing creation with set asides for those with intellectual

 developmental disabilities

3. Creation of panning system  for housing needs of persons with IDD.
